Walking pad under a standing desk: add the deck to your height

Updated

A walking pad lifts you by the thickness of its deck, about 4 to 6 inches on the pads we list. Add that to your normal standing height before you set the desk, and check that your desk goes high enough. Incline lifts you more.

Setup steps

  1. Find your desk height standing on the floor, elbows at about 90 degrees. Our sister site Desk Height Check walks through this and which desks go high enough.
  2. Add the pad's listed height. For the Sunny Treadpad that is 5.9 inches.
  3. If you use incline, add more. On the Treadpad, our rough estimate is about 3.0 inches at the front end at full incline. See walking pads with incline.
  4. Check the desk's top height against that total before you buy either one.
  5. Center the pad under the desk so the screen is straight ahead. Leave room behind you. WalkingPad's space guide says 5 to 6 feet behind a treadmill.
  6. Put the remote where you can reach it without looking down, and test how you would stop the belt with no remote.

Which pads suit a desk

At a desk you look at a screen, not your feet, so belt length matters more than usual. Check your minimum belt length and see our shortlist.

Can you use a walking pad without a desk?

Yes. Plenty of people walk while watching TV or taking a call. A few things change:

This is general information, not medical advice. Check with a doctor before you start a new exercise routine, especially if you have a health condition or have not exercised in a while. Keep children and pets away from the moving belt, and use the safety key if your machine has one.
