How to lubricate a walking pad and center the belt

Updated

Unplug the pad, lift the edge of the belt, put a little silicone lubricant on the deck under it, then run the belt slowly to spread it. How often depends on the maker: WalkingPad says every 3 months, Sunny says every six months or 150 miles. Your own manual wins over both.

Steps, from the makers

  1. Unplug it. Sunny says to always unplug before cleaning, lubricating or repairing.
  2. Use silicone lubricant. Both makers call for silicone. WalkingPad says 1 to 2 drops are enough on its pads. Sunny says to use about a quarter of its sample bottle and to lubricate before first use.
  3. Get under the belt. On a fold-in-half WalkingPad, fold half up so the belt goes slack. On Sunny machines, lift the side of the belt and apply in a zigzag, then do the other side.
  4. Spread it. Run the belt at a slow speed for a minute or so.
  5. Wipe up. Oil on the top of the belt makes it slippery. Clean off any before you walk.

Centering a belt that drifts

A belt that creeps to one side will rub and wear. Sunny's steps, which match most machines with two rear adjustment bolts:

  1. Put the machine on level ground and run it at 3 to 5 mph with nobody on it.
  2. If the belt moves right, turn the right bolt half a turn clockwise, then the left bolt half a turn counterclockwise.
  3. If it moves left, do the opposite: left bolt half a turn clockwise, right bolt half a turn counterclockwise.
  4. Wait, watch and repeat in small steps until it centers. Keep hands, hair and loose clothing well away from the rollers while it runs.

Many pads top out below 5 mph. Use your top speed in that case. WalkingPad also reminds owners to center the belt after oiling a folded pad.

Our shortlist

Among our picks, the Sunny Treadpad and Sunny SF-T724011 come from Sunny, whose support steps are above. The WalkingPad A1 Pro folds in half, the setup WalkingPad's steps describe. For the rest, follow the manual. See the full list on our shortlist and check your minimum belt length.

When to stop and call support

A burning smell, a belt that slips or jerks, sudden speed changes or a machine that is hot to the touch are not oiling problems. Stop using it. In 2026 the CPSC told owners of Sperax walking pads to stop using them over reports of sudden speed changes, abrupt stops and overheating. If you own any pad, check for recalls, and report problems at SaferProducts.gov.

This is general information, not medical advice. Check with a doctor before you start a new exercise routine, especially if you have a health condition or have not exercised in a while. Keep children and pets away from the moving belt, and use the safety key if your machine has one.
