Can you run on a walking pad?

Updated

On most walking pads, no. Many top out near 4 mph, which is a walk. The pads that go faster still have short belts and no rails. For jogging, our rule of thumb says a 5 ft 10 in person needs about 53 inches of belt, longer than any flat pad on our list.

Speed is not the whole story

The CDC lists jogging and running as vigorous activity, and brisk walking at 2.5 mph or faster as moderate. You can get a lot from brisk walking on a pad. Jogging needs more room.

Why rails and space matter more when you run

If walking is the goal, see walking pad or compact treadmill and our shortlist. Check your minimum belt length for jogging before you buy.

This is general information, not medical advice. Check with a doctor before you start a new exercise routine, especially if you have a health condition or have not exercised in a while. Keep children and pets away from the moving belt, and use the safety key if your machine has one.
